Joan Costa was born in Ibiza (Spain) in 1968.
He started working as a professional photographer in 1988 when he became a member of the staff at the local paper Diario de Ibiza
After working at different newspapers in Ibiza, Mallorca and Barcelona, he moved to Madrid in 1996 and began to work with the prestigious image agency Cover.
He specialized in travel photography and collaborated with Traveler Condé Nast Magazine, Viajar Magazine or EPS, the Sunday magazine of El País in Spain and other international magazines as Focus, Sky, the Sunday supplement of Financial Times in United Kingdom, the Travel section of New York Times, Il Venerdi in Italy or Epsilon in Greece among others.
In 1997 initiated a four years stage working as the official photographer of Menéndez Pelayo International University, UIMP.
In 2000 and 2001 worked with AECi, Spanish International Cooperation Agency in the production of two photographic books: Belize and New Mexico.
In 2004 and 2005 worked with Community of Madrid in the production of two photographic exhibitions: Ukraine, the eyes of the soul and Russian soul secrets.
In 2006 presented Naltros, a work about Ibiza’s popular culture and in 2010 Cases d’Eivissa, a photographic exhibition about Ibiza’s architecture.
In 2006 began to work with scientific photography and in 2010 became the official photographer of Malaspina 2010, an oceanographic expedition around the world to study impact of global change at the oceans. For this work he was awarded with 2nd Prize Nature category at World Press Photo 2012.
In 2013 he joined the University of Western Australia, UWA as an Artist in Residence. Also worked with King Abdullah University for Science and Technology, KAUST in Saudi Arabia.
During lasts years, his work has been focused in underwater photography.
